We Are Mitú: Social Media Ethics Guide
We are mitú is an online media company that focuses on presenting relatable content for Latinos, specifically U.S. born Latinx individuals who relate to the feeling of unbelongingness due to their cultural background even though they were born in the U.S. We are mitú provides news that directly affects the Latinx American community, as well as other content for the purpose of entertainment that many U.S. born Latinx individuals can relate to. Our main outlet is our website wearemitu.com, but our expansion to other social media platforms has allowed for substantial growth in our number of fans, as well as being able to provide a wide variety of diverse content.
As a media company, we fully understand that the way in which we present information using our social media platforms is incredibly important. We hold ourselves true with our code of ethics as our main goal is to be 100% transparent with everything we post, and give a voice to individuals that are often silenced or muted by mainstream media outlets.
Code of Ethics:
- Always be professional.
As an employee for we are mitú , you are expected to always be professional on our company’s social media sites and your personal accounts as well. Remember, you are the face of our media company and any action you do reflects on our company and influences our image. Whether that is posting on social media or responding to a comment, always remain professional.
2. Personal social media accounts are to not be shared on any of our platforms.
Employees are asked to keep their social media accounts completely separate and private. We will not promote any of our employees’ social media accounts.
3. We must have credible sources for any news that we share.
As a news outlet, we are responsible for making sure that anything we post on our website and social media platforms is supported by credible sources. We try to post as authentically as possible to always give our readers the correct information.
4. Always respond respectfully.
We are aware that not everyone will agree with news stories we share and many individuals will respond with opposing opinions. As a media company, it is our responsibility to respond to any comments respectfully without talking down on anyone that opposes our points of views.
5. Be diverse with our content.
Diversity is incredibly important when posting our content. We must be aware of the type of content, whether that’s a still image or a video, we must provide variety.
Also, it is incredibly important to be aware of the substance of our content. We want to give a voice to all Latinos and shed light on issues that are often silenced by many mainstream media outlets.
6. Avoid stereotyping.
We often present issues that have to do with Latinos directly. When posting about this, it is important to avoid stereotypes that can diminish their experiences and highlight them in a bad way. We are here to uplift and voice our Latinx community.
7. Be conscious of what you post.
Sometimes we post stories that are difficult for individuals to read as they often present stories that can be triggering to certain individuals. It is important to think about how we are presenting stories because sensitive issues can be difficult to read.
8. Take accountability for your actions.
As hard as we try to avoid any mistakes from happening, it is important to recognize that we are human and mistakes are sometimes inevitable. For this reason, it is incredibly crucial to always take accountability for your actions. Rather than trying to justify and defend your own actions, own up to them and understand why it may have bothered individuals. Here at we are mitú we like to see mistakes as growing experiences that only shape us into better people.
We hope that with these codes of ethics we can provide a positive experience for our readers, grow as a company, and stay true to what we stand for.
